Her first collection sold to women who had never walked into a jeweller without their husbands.
Aisha Rahman grew up above her father's gold shop in Hyderabad, watching women choose jewellery while their husbands paid. When she opened her own studio in Dubai at thirty-one, she designed for the other kind of customer.
"I wanted women to stop waiting to be given things," she says.
Her pieces are lighter than traditional bridal sets and made to be worn on an ordinary Tuesday. She sells most of them to women buying for themselves: after a promotion, a divorce, a fiftieth birthday.
The studio now has a waiting list of four months. Aisha still meets every client herself.
