She bought her first painting the month she retired as a school principal. She now lends to galleries.
For forty years Lata Deshmukh ran a girls' school in Pune. The month she retired, she walked into a small gallery on Prabhat Road and bought a painting by an artist nobody had heard of.
"I spent forty years telling children to be brave," she says. "It was my turn."
Eleven years later her flat holds more than two hundred works, almost all by artists under thirty-five, and she lends regularly to galleries in Mumbai and Delhi. She buys only what she would be happy to live with, and she has never sold a piece.
“I spent forty years telling children to be brave. It was my turn.”
